8.3/10 stinky bananas
Very fun feel good movie.
Free Guy had the potential to be absolutely terrible based on the premise alone. But Ryan Reynolds and company pulled it off. It’s a funny and charming movie. What else do you want out of a movie? Just sit back, have a few laughs, and enjoy yourself.
Ever since Deadpool, Ryan Reynolds has been on a heater. Seemingly every movie he is in is good, and this movie is no exception. Ryan’s quick wit and classic charm works to perfection in this movie.
The movie is pretty funny throughout, but a couple of standout moments for me are the teabag scene and every scene with Channing Tatum. Channing Tatum has this knack for being hilarious in small bit roles (for example, This is the End). He nails it again in Free Guy. Every time he’s on screen he steals the show. As for the teabag scene, I guarantee anybody that has played shooting video games in the last decade laughed out loud while watching that dead guy get teabagged by his murderer.
I also like that the secondary characters weren’t a complete waste of space. The subplot of the nerd romance with the guy from Stranger Things is delightful. The security guard best friend is great. The Dude is hilarious. Last but not least, Taika does a great job of not taking his villain character so seriously. Quite a few funny jokes from the big bad guy of the movie.
The grand finale of this movie is excellent. It’s a nerd’s wet dream and I loved it. Guy pulled out Cap’s shield with the MCU music playing over it. Fucking Chris Evans pops up for a half second for a shocking cameo. Guy then proceeds to pull out a lightsaber with the Star Wars music playing over it. And that sir, is friggin cool. Me describing the scene over text does not do it justice. It is a great moment in a very solid movie.
Gripe time.
Gripe #1: There is a bit of a lull somewhere in the middle of the movie. It happens in a lot of movies. It’s all good, but why don’t you just cut out some crap and make the movie shorter. Just an idea.
Gripe #2: The streamers. It was cool at first but it got old real quick. Why are they force feeding me these streamers? Jesus Christ, I get it, Ninja is in the movie. I don’t need to see him on screen 95 times.
Definitely worth a watch. Highly recommend as a date night movie too.
